๐๐ข๐ฅ๐ก๐ค๐ฎ๐๐ ๐ค๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ ๐๐ช๐๐ง๐ฉ๐๐ง!Newton Correctional Facility's Sgt Marv Thurmond is the Employee of the Quarter!Marv is always willing to help. Whether it is replacing and repairing equipment in the units, count, breaks, rounds, retrieving needed clothing/bedding, or anything, he is a wealth of information, and when staff ask for advice, he will tell you honestly what he would do without judgement.Marv is also very good about showing staff (new or tenured) how to do something they may have never done before. His coworkers call him the toughest nice guy you could ever meet! Thanks for being you, Marv, and congratulations!#IDOC

Cloudy weather didn't stop the fun and excitement of Burlington's National Night Out event last week! The 8th District staff was proud to help build a connection between law enforcement/first responders and the community. Residential Officers Paula Bragg and Kevin Suchomski, HRU Sergeant Jon Dean, and Residential Supervisor Dalton Henry had fun passing out candy, popsicles, and district-branded items to the crowd as they enjoyed all the different activities offered at the event. Following the event, residents from the Burlington Residential Facility volunteered their time to help with clean up. Opportunities like this provide a great way for residents to give back to their community. It is great to see residents help out and be a part of something positive.A big thank you to the Des Moines County Attorney's Office and the Burlington Police Department for putting this great event together and inviting the 8th District to be a part of it!#IDOC

The National Wellness Recovery Action Plan (WRAP) held two training sessions the same week of June in Cedar Rapids with two diverse groups.WRAP Seminar II: WRAP is very excited to announce a new cohort of certified WRAP Facilitators from the IDOC. Recognizing the effect WRAP has on people involved in the justice system and those reentering the community, this esteemed group of new Facilitators embraced the values and ethics of WRAP and will be providing WRAP to the incarcerated individuals they support and to staff to improve opportunities for staff wellness. Lead Advanced Level Facilitators (ALFs) Lynn Miller and Dormen Lisby trained the new group that included parole officers, administrators, former correctional officers, treatment staff, psychologists, and reentry specialists: Billy Bruce, Paige Williams, Jaime Jo Baker, Marissa Soliz-Davison, Jim Varland, Colin Sida, Stacie Anderson, Alfredo Rodriguez, Kathy Guill, and Shane Bailey. Congrats to all!WRAP Seminar III: 11 deeply dedicated peers were brought together through Life Connections Peer Recovery Services to train and begin their mentorship to become ALFs. Lead ALFs Sarah Farmer and Toni Lynn Pakus facilitated the training. Participants openly shared their powerful recovery stories and the many ways WRAP has changed their lives for the better. WRAP is confident they will inspire and touch the lives of many future WRAP Facilitators through their compassion, empathy, humor, and authentic vulnerability. Kudos to every member of this group: Jennifer Patel, Jennnifer Riley, Emily Meier, Shayler Kramer, Lisa Bartels, Katelyn Hamilton, Bobbi Jo Hare, Matthea Little Smith, Roxanne Petersen, Ellen Brimeyer, and Ruth Hart.#IDOC | #WRAP
